Bathroom Maintenance: 4 Practical Steps for Repairing Damaged Grout

Blog

The flow of water through your shower tiling grout can cause extensive damage in your house. In general, the moisture could damage the bathroom flooring and even compromise the structural integrity of the area through which the water will leak. Also, you will notice staining and discolouration on the ceiling section right below the leaking bathroom.

Over time, mould and mildew might begin developing due to the penetration of moisture. Therefore, if you notice any signs of leakage in your bathroom, it is advisable to plan for immediate repairs. Timely restoration will prevent the escalation of these problems. Here are some simple and practical guidelines for repairing grout to prevent harmful leakage.

1. Clean the Tiling

When conducting grout repairs, you should begin by cleaning the bathroom thorough with special focus on the shower area. If your bathroom is leaking, the water is probably flowing from this section. You should begin by washing and scrubbing the flooring thoroughly to eliminate scum and fungi on the tiles and grout. You can use regular soaps for the work, but it might be worthwhile to purchase special ceramic and grout cleaner.

2. Remove Loose Grout

Once your tiling is clean, inspect the condition of the revealed grout. Often, people assume that their grout is in good condition because its real condition is concealed by grime. Cleaning is instrumental in making an objective evaluation. If the grout is showing signs of breaking down, you should remove all the damaged material until you reach stable grout. You can use a narrow chisel and a mallet for this process. Other suitable tools include grout saws, flat-head screwdrivers and rotary tools.

3. Apply Repair Material

When you have eliminated the damaged grout, you should scrape the joints of the tiles to clear out residues. Brush the revealed cracks thoroughly to eliminate any particles which might compromise your repairs. Once this is done, you can begin repairing the damage. Under ideal circumstances, you should purchase pre-mixed grout from a hardware store for the patching process. You can acquire the material in little tubs or tubes. Apply the repair grout into the joints of the tiles to completely seal the openings.

4. Seal the Grout

Finally, you should think about sealing the grout to minimise moisture penetration. Like other sealers, grout sealer will create a water-resistant barrier which will minimise and prevent the absorption of water and subsequent leaks. If you are interested in this improvement process, allow the fresh grout to cure completely. Then purchase and apply grout sealer along each joint for optimal protection.

The Joy of Completing a Restoration Project

Howdy! My name is Eric and I am here to tell you all about the joys of completing a restoration project. Until recently, I had no idea of the pleasure which could be had when working on a project to repair an item. I used to throw things away when they were worn out. However, my friend realised what I was doing and invited me to the local restoration club. At the club, we are taught how to repair furniture, jewellery and other items. I really love attending the club and I have learnt a great deal about this fascinating subject.
