Plaster Ceiling Repairs in Easy Steps

Blog

Are you the owner of a lovely old house with beautifully decorated plaster ceilings? Naturally, the years take their toll, and inevitably cracks will appear. It is vital to take action to maintain your asset in top condition. These steps will take you through simple plaster ceiling repairs.

Step 1 - Identify the Cause of the Crack

Discover if there is a structural problem or leak. In this situation, you may need professional assistance. However, you can repair most cracks with a light application of pre-mixed joint compound and a coat of paint. Before you start the repairs, it may be better to seek a professional to identify the root of the problem.

Step 2 - Gather Your Tools

Have safety glasses and a good dust mask before starting. It will also help to have a disposable set of coveralls, a long-sleeved shirt, and a peaked cap. Dust and even insulation from the attic will fall when you begin cutting into the plaster. Old insulation contains hazardous materials, including fiberglass and asbestos, and some earlier paints included lead.

In addition, you need these hardware store items:

  • Drywall screws and washers
  • Pre-mixed joint compound
  • Utility knife
  • Drywall tape

Step 3 - Attach the Plaster

Fractures are usually caused by plaster detaching from the wall. In order to lift it back into position, use a number of drywall screws and plaster washers.

  • Place 40mm drywall screws along the length of the crack at a distance of around six inches. Make the crack wider by cutting on both sides with a utility knife at a 45-degree angle away from it.
  • Apply the first layer of premixed joint compound.
  • Cover the crack with drywall tape.
  •  Apply the joint compound with a trowel over the crack and cover the screws. Put another layer of joint compound on top of the crack after covering it with tape.

 Step 4 - Repair Holes

This step is only necessary if you detect a hole.

The most common causes of plaster ceiling holes are either water damage or someone stepping through the plaster while in the attic and missing a batten. Plaster hole restoration is a little trickier, no matter the circumstance. However, if you proceed with care, it is easily managed.

  • Cut or score the hole where the ceiling is secure.
  • Pull the plaster down carefully around the hole.
  • Cut all the way around it.
  • Tap the edges lightly to remove the dust and debris.
  • Cut a new piece of plasterboard with dimensions that fit the hole.
  • Attach new plaster to the ceiling joists.
  • Tape the edges, and then apply and smooth down the compound.

Sit back and enjoy your handiwork.

The Joy of Completing a Restoration Project

Howdy! My name is Eric and I am here to tell you all about the joys of completing a restoration project. Until recently, I had no idea of the pleasure which could be had when working on a project to repair an item. I used to throw things away when they were worn out. However, my friend realised what I was doing and invited me to the local restoration club. At the club, we are taught how to repair furniture, jewellery and other items. I really love attending the club and I have learnt a great deal about this fascinating subject.
